Mercedes Arcos with individual approval as motorhome

Check Your Registration Options Before Buying

Before buying a pre-owned expedition or overland truck, check where you can register it in the European region. Your home country may present unexpected barriers for custom-built pre-owned trucks. A reflection of the realities in this niche market of European custom built vehicles.

You have found it: the truck you have searched for and dreamed about for months, maybe years. The living unit feels just right, the specs fit and the viewing is booked. You can already picture the first night under the stars.

Then comes a question almost nobody asks in time: where will this truck get its license plate?

This article is for you if you want to buy a pre-owned expedition or overland truck in the European region, the largest market for these trucks in the world. Maybe you live here, as a native or as a resident, or you own a house here. Or you are a buyer from outside Europe who is drawn to the European market.

First, one fact that shapes everything. A heavy expedition or overland truck is really a heavy motorhome: a truck chassis, such as a MAN TGM, a MAN TGS or a Mercedes Arocs, turned into an apartment on wheels.

Being a motorhome takes it out of the heavily regulated class of cargo trucks built for freight in the European region. For world travel, that is also the single biggest advantage you have. It frees you from local rules for heavy trucks, whether at a police checkpoint, a toll tunnel or a border crossing.

And almost every one of them is custom-built. No two are the same. So there is no shared European type approval: each truck conversion needs its own individual approval in each European country. Take the truck to another country for a plate, and that whole process starts again from zero.

This is where the story really begins.

Your home country may be the first wall

Most first-time buyers think: "I will simply register the truck at home." It feels natural. But a home plate ties your motorhome to your home country's rules for registration, inspection and tax, even while you travel the world for years. Later comes the surprise: a tax bill nobody planned for, or a rule the truck cannot meet.

Why is it so hard? Across the European region, the approval systems for custom-built heavy vehicles are not aligned. For historic reasons, each country keeps its own hurdles, which often means very specific, detailed rules.

No country in Europe makes individual approval easy. But in some countries, the barrier for a pre-owned heavy motorhome is far higher than elsewhere, so high that you may be far better off not registering your truck there at all.

Do you live in one of the countries below, or do you plan to import and register a pre-owned custom-built heavy overland or expedition truck there? Then you may want to evaluate your license plate options first:

  • France and Spain

  • Denmark, Austria, Netherlands, Ireland and Portugal

  • Norway, Iceland and the United Kingdom

A short example from just one of these countries:

In France, the hurdle is the individual approval for a pre-owned custom-built vehicle, the réception à titre isolé (RTI), handled by the French DREAL. It is a multi-layered approval system. The truck needs a specific set of French-only documents, which do not exist for most custom-built heavy trucks made outside France. And that is before the RTI approval process, complicated in nature, can even start.

So you start looking for answers. And that is where it gets confusing and complicated.

Lost between forums, misinformation and horror stories

Many prospective buyers come from an automotive background, or at least have an affinity with it: they have owned a smaller 4x4 or a motorhome, or they love tinkering with all sorts of vehicles. Most adore the technical side and are reasonably good at it. So they tackle the license plate in the same way: "I can figure this out myself."

But tax, regulatory and registration rules are a different world, in another country and often another language. Online you find scattered pieces of (mis)information and horror stories about trucks that never got a plate. You search forums, call builders, ask sellers. Sometimes for months.

Often it goes like this. You find a truck you love abroad and ask the seller to help solve the plate question. Now the seller is searching too. Weeks later, neither of you has the definitive answer. The viewing, the travel, the price talks: all for nothing. In the end, most buyers in this situation walk away, because at this price level the risk of not being issued a license plate is simply too high.

And sometimes the real discovery is even bigger: you live in the wrong country.

When where you live is the problem

Many of the people we speak with live in one of the countries mentioned above. For them, the message is simple. If you found a pre-owned, custom-built heavy truck outside your own country, you will most likely not be able to register it at home within a reasonable time, effort and cost.

Buyers from outside Europe often face the same unexpected discovery. Many have chosen France, Spain or Portugal for their residency or second home. These are among the hardest places to plate a custom-built truck, because each of them has its own specific, historic rules. Most find out long after the choice was made.

So both groups ask the same question: can I own this truck in another European country instead? Yes, solutions exist. But that country has its own rules and taxes, just as detailed and often just as complicated as at home. This is where it becomes truly hard to see the whole picture.

And even when the rules are clear, there can be one more surprise: the truck itself.

When how the truck was built is the problem

Most expedition and overland trucks are built in countries such as Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium. Builders know their local plate system well, sometimes through a shortcut, a loophole or a helpful contact that gets a local owner a plate faster or more easily.

The trouble starts later. The first owner travels, comes home and sells. Now the truck needs a new individual approval in another country, which reads the rules differently. Choices made during the build, optimized for the approval process in the country where it was built, come to the surface. Not tax, not rules: the truck was simply built in a way that the new country will not accept.

And this is only about building for a local license plate as a heavy motorhome. Building an expedition or overland truck for long-term overlanding or difficult terrain is a whole other subject. That’s something we’ve covered in an earlier article about overland and expedition truck architecture, design and construction.

So what should you do instead?

Plate first, truck second

Turn the usual order around. Most prospective buyers find the truck, book the viewing, fall in love, and only then discover the problem. Instead, answer the plate question first.

The knowledge behind this is deep, different in every country, written in each country's own language, and, for fully custom-built trucks, often not found on the internet. It took us more than ten years to develop this expertise. A suitable registration solution depends on many factors. Your personal circumstances, your travel plans and the truck itself are just some of them. That is why assessing your situation requires an individual consultation rather than a short email or a quick phone call.

Here is the good news. If your own country is the wall, your journey is not over. In many cases you can own your truck in another European country as a non-resident. We can help you get there, and explain what owning a truck on a foreign plate means, because there is a whole world of detail there too.

Answering this question first can save you a huge amount of time, effort and money. Sometimes it is sorted in a few weeks instead of months of searching. The journey you have dreamed of for so long may be much closer than you think.
